The Australian Korean Friendship Group (AKFG) is an independent organisation that is affiliated with AFQ).

Membership of the Australian Korean Friendship Group (Queensland) Inc.  is made up of:

  • Families who have adopted one or more children from South Korea;
  • Families or who are in the process of adopting from South Korea;
  • Individuals and families in the wider community who support us in our process of adoption or in assisting us as our children grow;

    and
  • Members of the Korean Community who guide and support us in providing opportunities for our children to maintain and develop their understanding of the country and culture of their birth.
AKFG was established to:
  • Provide opportunities for social interaction for our families - adults and children
  • Offer support to members in all phases of their lives - as adoptive parents, adopted children and prospective mums and dads, siblings and extended families
  • Act as advocates for intercountry adoption, especially from Korea, with the Department of Child Safety and liaise regularly with the Department of Child Safety
  • Support financially, emotionally and spiritually the work of Eastern Social Welfare Society whose role in our forming families is so great
  • Provide opportunities for interaction with the local Korean community so that we may learn more of the Korean culture, which is part of our children's heritage.

KFG achieves these goals through:

  • The production of a quarterly magazine - "Mugunghwa". This magazine, named after the floral emblem of South Korea (also known as the Rose of Sharon), provides information outcomes relating to liaison with the Department; stories from families who have traveled to pick up new babies; birth/allocation announcements; birthday club to celebrate children's birthdays and include photographs from previous quarter's celebrations; recipes for Korean dishes; "Cultural Connection" which provides insights into varied aspects, beliefs and practices in Korean culture, as well as topical items from the news relating to Korea and/or adoption.
  • Chat 'n Play where Mums, Dads and children can catch up for a morning of fun in the park and a morning tea to share. These events move around Brisbane parks depending on seasonal activities. The timetable and location are advised in "Mugunghwa".
  • Fundraising activities which support the work of Eastern Social Welfare Society.
  • Taking part in social events for Mums and Dads to get to know each other
  • Representation by the President and Vice-President/ Department Liaison in meetings with the Department of Families and other intercountry adoption support groups for regular intercountry adoption meetings.
